Popularized by Japanese fashion designers like Issey Miyake, pleats is a technique of folding or doubling fabric that is pressed, ironed or creased into place. The unique style of folding is achieved by doubling or tripling (e.g. triple pleats) the fabric back upon itself, and then securing it in place.

Because it can gather wider lenghts of fabric into narrower circumferences or shapes, pleats (or triple pleats) aren't only visually attractive, but also allow elasticity and form adaptability that isn't possible to achieve using traditional techniques or fabrics.
