Popularized by Japanese fashion designers like Issey Miyake, pleats is a special method of folding or doubling fabrics that are pressed, ironed or creased into place. This special folding technique is achieved by doubling or tripling (e.g. triple pleats) the fabric back upon itself, then securing it in place.
Because it gathers wider lenghts of fabric into shorter circumferences, pleats (or triple pleats) allow a degree of elasticity that is not possible to achieve using traditional techniques.
