Popularized by Japanese fashion designers like Issey Miyake and European labels like Balenciaga, pleats is a special technique that consists of folding or doubling fabrics by pressing, ironing or creasing them into place. This unique folding style is achieved by doubling or tripling (e.g. triple pleats) the fabric back upon itself, then securing it in place.
Because it gathers longer lenghts of fabric into shorter shapes, pleats (or triple pleats) aren't only visually attractive, but also allow a level of elasticity that isn't possible to achieve using traditional techniques.
