This unique folding method is achieved by doubling or tripling (e.g. triple pleats) the fabric back upon itself, then securing it in place.

Because it can gather wider lenghts of fabric into shorter shapes, pleats (or triple pleats) aren't only visually attractive, but also allow a level of elasticity that is not possible to achieve using traditional techniques or fabrics.
