Popularized by Japanese fashion designers like Issey Miyake, pleats is a technique of folding or doubling fabrics that are pressed, ironed or creased into place. This unique folding style is achieved by doubling or tripling (e.g. "triple pleats") the fabric back upon itself and then securing it in place.
Because it can gather longer lenghts of fabric into shorter shapes, pleats (or triple pleats) aren't only visually attractive, but also allow elasticity and form adaptability that isn't possible to achieve using traditional techniques.
