Popularized by Japanese fashion designers like Issey Miyake, pleats is a special technique that consists of folding or doubling fabrics by pressing, ironing or creasing them into place. This unique folding method is achieved by doubling or tripling (e.g. triple pleats) the fabric back upon itself, then securing it in place.
Because it gathers wider lenghts of fabric into shorter shapes, pleats (or triple pleats) aren't only visually attractive, but also allow elasticity and adaptability that isn't possible to achieve using traditional techniques.
